Growing Career with a growing family – London or the Isle of Man?

London; one of the most prosperous capitals in the world. Thriving with business and offering endless career progression to those with a hunger for wealth and success.

It can be a great location to grow your career, but at what cost? Long commutes; constantly rising living costs; competition for school places; unreliable and expensive childcare – are just some of the reasons many working parents are starting to think that there must be a better way. The UK economy is slowly but surely decentralising away from London and a growing number of professionals are looking towards the Isle of Man as a viable alternative. In fact, a lot of parents that we talk to on the Isle of Man say that they couldn’t think of a better place in the world to be working and raising a family.

Career Opportunities

The Isle of Man economy centres around a few key sectors. It has traditionally been home to Finance and Professional Services, and although ‘home-grown’ talent is excellent there continues to be a huge demand for professionals such as Lawyers and Accountants from off-island. Expect diverse, challenging work that is likely to be broader in scope than roles in the capital.

The fastest-growing sector in recent years has been eGaming; with companies like Pokerstars and Microgaming making the Isle of Man their main hub for business. Key skills required are Digital Marketing and Technology-related roles, particularly Software Engineers and Developers. If you work in these sectors you can expect big marketing budgets and the opportunity to work with the latest technologies.

Cost of Living

The cost of living on the Isle of Man is significantly less than in London. It is also worth noting that tax rates are lower, so your take-home salary will be much higher. Housing prices are also much more affordable – the average price for a three-bedroom semi-detached home in the capital of Douglas is around £280,000.

Shorter commutes

The maximum commute to anywhere on the island is just half an hour; a welcome change to the average London commute of 74 minutes, meaning more time to enjoy with your family. There is also a huge cycling community on the island, and with shower facilities in many offices, why limit your commute to the car?

Providing your child with a good education is bound to be important to you and your family. The Island’s schools are particularly impressive, consistently performing very well compared to international standards, and the qualifications offered are the same as those in the UK. The Island does have one excellent private school, The King William’s College.

Relocation assistance

The Isle of Man Government recognises the skills shortage on Island; this, coupled with a less than 1% unemployment rate, has driven the Government to work towards solutions that encourage individuals to relocate here. The Government has relaxed its work permit regulations and offers relocation assistance for you and your family up to £10,000.

The 8th richest country in the world, the Isle of Man is a self-governing British Crown Dependency, located between England and Ireland. It is less than one hour’s flight from London and under 30 minutes from Manchester and Liverpool.

Recently awarded the prestigious UNESCO biosphere status, the Island is simply stunning and bursting with outdoor pursuits! Not to mention it’s home to the world-famous TT races. Once a year we welcome an influx of more than 40,000 visitors over a two-week period of motorsports, beer tents, and festivities for the whole family.

Unsurprisingly, the island has once again been declared The Safest Place in the British Isles.

The benefits of relocating to the Isle of Man are irrefutable, which certainly makes the options one worth investigating. Of course, a relocation is always a big decision.
