Our Client is seeking an experienced Compliance Services Business Development Executive/Officer to add sales and development strength to their expanding team in Malta. You will be responsible for the proactive development of the business in Malta, working closely with the company’s Compliance Executives who are responsible for the delivery of compliance and regulatory services to clients on a day-to-day basis. The Compliance Executives work closely and directly with the several allocated clients who outsource their compliance function to the organisation, where in many instances the executives are appointed by the clients as their approved Compliance Officer.

Whilst not expected to assume directly any of the Compliance Officer roles which the organisation provides to clients in Malta, the ideal candidate will require a good understanding of the service offering and the regulatory work undertaken by the Compliance Executives, hence a close working relationship with the executives will be required.  The Business Development Executive will, therefore, need to be able to support the executives in their client relationships, usually at client Board or Senior Management level, so knowledge of the clients and their industry sectors, and the rules relating to those sectors, will be required.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Ability to provide practical compliance cover to clients in the absence of the appointed Compliance Executive would be helpful although not essential, overall client relationship support will be expected.
  • The incumbent will be required to maintain relevant personal training, qualifications and Continuing Professional Development, including attendance at suitable seminars, workshops etc. where appropriate.
  • Reporting and key working relationships
  • The incumbent will work as part of a small local team in Malta, liaising with the wider staff and management in the other offices as required.
  • The Business Development Executive will report to the company’s CEO, based in Guernsey, and will be a key member of the Senior Management Team.

Role Characteristics:

  • The role requires a competent compliance professional, specialising in financial regulations but with broader industry experience, with a proven track record in sales, marketing and business development generally;
  • Strong technical knowledge with the ability to put this into practice at client level by providing advice and consultancy as part of the sales process, then ongoing;
  • The incumbent may have specialised in individual financial sectors, but must have an interest in and ability to develop and to learn the specific regulatory requirements and legislation across the varied businesses operating in Malta;
  • This is not a desk-bound, single licensee position. Our compliance executives operate across a range of clients on a “roving” basis, so their ability to adapt and manage client workload is important.  The Business Development Executive is expected to work with his/her fellow officers to ensure client requirements can be met, pricing of the service is adequate and profitable, and any issues arising are identified at the earliest opportunity so that remedial action can be taken;
  • Teamwork is essential as with any small team.  All officers regardless of the specific role are expected to work with and support each other in their work;
  • All officers are expected to take ownership of clients, which includes regular review of service delivery requirements and profitability of the relationship:
  • Officers are expected to remain aware of market trends and practices, and to be conscious of business development opportunities as they arise, whether additional work/services for existing clients or potential new clients if the opportunities arise.

The Candidate

  • Be a suitably qualified, experienced practitioner from one or more of the financial industry sectors in Malta, with a strong and extensive regulatory background, possibly as Compliance Officer and/or MLRO, or suitable legal training;
  • Have a proven business development and sales ability, with a strong understanding of financial regulations and able to demonstrate that understanding to clients at senior/Board level;
  • Have a broad knowledge across industries of developments in Malta and other equivalent jurisdictions, with an ability to act as a consultant to clients during the sales process and afterwards, in support of the actions of the Compliance Executives delivery team;
  • Take responsibility for the design and implementation of a comprehensive and focused Business Development Plan, including regular sales calls with clients and prospective client meetings;
  • Attend suitable seminars, develop networks of contacts (lawyers, accountants, tax advisers etc), and on occasion arrange such seminars on behalf of Active, identifying relevant topics and working with fellow professionals as appropriate;
  • Have a good relationship with key officers at the MFSA and FIAU, be an approved person as applicable, and be generally recognised in the industry as a leading professional in this field.
