We are looking for an exceptional Database Administrator to join one of the globe’s largest insurance firms. Your mission will be to put in place and aid in the enforcement of a strategy for developing and maintaining UWS databases and ensure the acceptable performance, stability, availability and governance of those databases.

You will also work closely with the Business Systems and Software Development teams to deliver and support SQL database solutions to our internal and external customers, advising on performance, scalability and optimisation. You’ll architect and implement systems, solutions and services, whilst also managing the service transition of database solutions into the operations team.

Other Key Responsibilities:

  • Database performance – Report and advise on performance bottlenecks and suggested solutions;
  • Operations and Support – Resolve systems issues related to the database malfunction. Document issues and analyse usage in order to put in place preventative measures to reduce downtime;
  • Methods and Procedures – Provide significant input into the development, improvement and implementation of effective methods and procedures relating to:
    • Database design, maintenance and use
    • Data storage and backup strategy
    • Database recovery policy and DR procedures
    • Database access and user privileges
    • Data protection, encryption and disposal
  • Governance – Periodically review UWS procedures related to the storage, access, disposal and use of data in order to ensure compliance with a policy. Provide significant input into the governance of databases. Provide usage and KPI reporting as required.
  • Colleague Mentoring and Development – Aid in the education of developers responsible for writing databases access code to ensure they are competent and aware of best practices to reduce the risk of underperforming code.
  • Technical Expertise – Develop and maintain a strong level of technical knowledge relating to database administration.

The Candidate

  • At least 2 years’ experience in a database administration role;
  • DBA qualifications equivalent to MCSA: SQL Server (Solutions Associate) for MS SQL 2012/2016. Qualifications relevant to the role e.g. relevant degree or IT professional qualifications would also be considered;
  • General knowledge of all aspects of information technology infrastructure hardware and software and a good understanding of current developments in information systems;
  • Knowledge of different relational database management systems such as Oracle and SQL server;
  • Demonstrate a positive motivated attitude;
  • Has the ability to work on own initiative and within a team environment;
  • Good problem-solving skills;
  • Ability to work under pressure;
  • Display a ‘can-do’ attitude;
  • Good communication skills (written & verbal), with the ability to share knowledge & skills;
  • Good customer service skills.
