The Role

We are now looking for a Database Administrator to join our Client’s friendly team in Malta. The aim of this role is to design, install, configure, administer and maintain databases, perform regular backups and recovery, performance tuning and ensure database security and availability, according to the Company’s needs and in compliance with the standards and best practices.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring the uptime of the Company’s database system;
  • Suggesting ways to cost-effectively improve database technologies;
  • Identify, report and rectify issues with the database systems;
  • Research current technological trends and ways that can help the business in reducing the costs, minimising the chance of data loss, and improving performance;
  • Liaise with developers to mentor, vet and improve their code;
  • Drive the security policy of the database systems;
  • Work alongside the Database Architect & Head of Analytics.

Duties/Activities:

  • Design, implement and/or improve backup strategy for the production databases;
  • Design, implement and test a disaster recovery scheme where needed;
  • Administrate and monitor existing databases and thus support the Company’s software solution;
  • Detect, define and correct any performance bottlenecks in the Company’s databases;
  • Be able to dimension the database system for the company’s future growth requirements;
  • Perform timely updates of the Company’s databases;
  • Liaise with the infrastructure team to address issues with the system, storage, and network systems.

The Candidate

  • A BS Degree in computer programming, computing, information technology, software development or related field;
  • 2-3 years of proven experience in the same or similar role (DBA preferred, or DB Developer considered);
  • Experience with MSSQL Security infrastructure;
  • Strong grasp and experience with query tuning, index and statistics maintenance in MSSQL;
  • A good grasp of T-SQL scripting, development, tuning and methods therein;
  • Experience with backups, monitoring, and dimensioning of the systems;
  • Theoretical knowledge and understanding of the concepts surrounding disaster recovery, and high availability systems;
  • Good knowledge of English, both written and spoken;
  • Experience with Windows Failover clustering and distributed high availability systems under the MS tech umbrella;
  • Experience with transactional replication, availability groups and cloud computing (Azure or AWS);
  • Experience in a similar 24/7 e-commerce environment;
  • Microsoft DBA certifications a bonus;
  • Previous role in a dynamic multicultural environment a plus;
  • Motivated to learn and understand the business and its components;
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;
  • Responsible and reliable;
  • An ability to work to tight deadlines and within constraints.
