The Joys of Jersey Living: Hobbies, Activities and Sports You Can Do On The Island

In one of our previous articles, we mentioned many reasons why Jersey has become a popular destination for business owners and their families, with an unbeatable quality of life as well as peace of mind for your finances. As a specialist recruitment agency that helps people relocate and find jobs in Jersey, the team at Boston Link takes another look at living on the largest Channel Island from a different angle. Here are 10 hobbies you can take up if – or when! – you decide to move.

1. Golf

Jersey is a veritable hole-in-one for golfing fanatics – pun very much intended. With a selection of six golf courses available, including 9-hole and 18-hole championship courses, golfers can benefit from excellent playing conditions and fantastic views. Taking all of this into consideration, it’s little wonder that Open Championship winners Ted Ray and Harry Vardon both originated from this island!

2. Kayaking

What good is an island if you can’t explore the sea that surrounds it? Luckily, locals and tourists are granted multiple opportunities to explore the glorious seascape along the coastline, with kayaking being one of the best and most popular ways of doing so. Cruise into little coves, where you’ll come across remains of ancient diving platforms; paddle beneath the famous Mont Orgueil Castle or traverse across South-East coast gullies to discover an ocean-bed teeming with marine life.

3. Trekking

Grab the kids and take a walk on the wild side along one of Jersey’s rugged beach trails or peaceful, wooded valleys. Whether you venture North, South, East or West, you’re bound to find a plethora of natural wonders in the form of coastal heathlands, watery ‘moonscapes’, tumbling dunes and steep cliffs clad in gorse and bracken. Self-guided routes are also available online should you find yourself in need of some inspiration.

4. Stand Up Paddle Boarding

The island’s newest and hugely popular water-sport ensures that you’ll be laughing as often as you fall overboard! Originally from Hawaii, stand up paddle boarding (SUP) began as an offshoot of surfing, where the boarders stand on the board and use a paddle to propel themselves across the water. Also known as Beach Boy Surfing or Paddle Surfing, the sport has become somewhat of a craze in Jersey; instructors guide boarders along the coastline’s fresh waters as they do their utmost to maintain their balance!

5. Sightseeing

History lovers will certainly not be short of places to visit or sights to see in Jersey. The island’s rich history goes back all the way to the Stone Age, as evinced by the ancient burial grounds which are found in sites such as Le Mont Ubé, La Pouquelaye de Faldouet and Les Monts de Grantez. Take in magnificent views of the iconic landmarks and castles along the coastlines that reflect Jersey’s long military heritage.

6. Yoga

It’s not just for millennials! Unwind and find your inner peace by signing up for one of Jersey’s unique yoga retreats. From garden yoga in the heart of St. Ouen’s lush countryside to a luxury experience at Ayush Spa, nourish your body and soul and recharge your batteries in some of the most beautiful places on the island.

7. Bowling

Bowling is a fun activity to take up, particularly if you have kids who are in need of some entertainment! The island’s only indoor tenpin bowling centre, Jersey Bowl is equipped with 18 lanes, an indoor play area, arcade games including a pool table, and even a bar with a large screen projector for tired parents! Perfect for a family day out.

8.  Bird watching

Jersey is full of beautiful and fascinating wildlife, including the many bird species such as the Atlantic Puffin, the European Honey Buzzard and the Little Auk. Sign your family up for one of the many bird tours offered on the island, and develop your birding skills in the relaxed and tranquil atmosphere of Jersey’s countryside.
