Head of Compliance & MLRO
Regulated Fintech / Payments & Digital Assets
Malta
We are working with a fast-growing regulated European fintech operating at the intersection of payments, digital assets and stablecoin infrastructure. The company is now looking to appoint a Head of Compliance & MLRO to take ownership of its compliance and AML/CFT framework, working closely with the CEO, Board and wider leadership team.
The Role
Responsibilities include:
- Leading the Compliance and AML/CFT functions and ensuring adherence to applicable regulatory requirements.
- Acting as MLRO and overseeing the company's AML/CFT framework.
- Maintaining compliance policies, procedures, monitoring programmes and risk assessments.
- Overseeing KYC/KYB, high-risk onboarding, transaction monitoring, sanctions and PEP screening.
- Reviewing internal suspicious activity reports and determining appropriate external reporting.
- Advising senior management and the Board on regulatory and financial crime matters.
- Managing regulatory reporting, inspections and supervisory interactions.
- Monitoring regulatory developments across payments, electronic money, AML/CFT, sanctions and digital assets.
- Working closely with Product, Technology and Commercial teams to ensure compliance is embedded into new products, markets and customer propositions.
- Supporting the continued development of the compliance function as the business scales.
We are looking for an experienced compliance professional with:
- Senior compliance, AML/CFT or financial crime experience within an EMI, payment institution, bank, fintech or similar regulated business.
- Previous experience as Head of Compliance, MLRO, Deputy MLRO or equivalent.
- Strong knowledge of Maltese and EU AML/CFT requirements.
- Experience dealing directly with regulators.
- Strong understanding of KYC/KYB, transaction monitoring, sanctions and customer risk assessment.
- The ability to understand complex payment flows and translate regulatory requirements into practical controls.
- Strong judgement and the confidence to challenge senior stakeholders where required.
Experience within digital assets, blockchain payments or stablecoins would be advantageous, although strong regulated payments experience is more important than purely crypto-sector experience.
Previous experience as an approved MLRO or Compliance Officer within a Maltese regulated financial institution is required.
This is an opportunity to take a leading compliance role within a well-funded, technology-led fintech operating in a rapidly developing area of financial services, with significant influence over how the compliance framework evolves as the business grows internationally.
