About the Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineering Manager to join an established organisation operating within the financial services sector.
This is an opportunity to take ownership of a business-critical Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence environment, combining hands-on technical leadership with team management, data engineering and stakeholder collaboration.
You will be responsible for ensuring that data pipelines, data models and reporting solutions are reliable, scalable, well-governed and aligned with business requirements.
Working with a specialist team, you will lead the development and continuous improvement of the organisation's data infrastructure, helping transform complex data into meaningful insights that support business decisions.
The role offers a combination of technical delivery, operational ownership and people leadership, making it well suited to someone who enjoys remaining close to the technology while guiding a team.
 
Key Responsibilities
Data Warehouse & Data Engineering

• Lead the design, development, maintenance and continuous improvement of the organisation's Data Warehouse environment.
• Develop and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines using Talend or equivalent technologies.
• Manage data ingestion, transformation and integration from multiple internal and external sources.
• Design and optimise data models, curated datasets and reusable data views.
• Monitor data pipelines, troubleshoot failures and resolve data quality issues.
• Support deployments, system enhancements, releases and change management activities.
• Ensure data solutions meet appropriate performance, reliability and governance standards.

 
Business Intelligence & Reporting

• Develop and maintain BI-ready datasets, semantic models and reporting structures.
• Work closely with BI Developers to translate business requirements into effective data models and reporting solutions.
• Ensure consistency across data definitions, business rules, KPIs and reporting outputs.
• Optimise data accessibility and reporting performance.
• Contribute to the development and improvement of data marts and reporting frameworks.

 
Platform Operations & Continuous Improvement

• Ensure the stability, availability and performance of the Data Warehouse environment.
• Manage operational incidents, data issues and pipeline failures through to resolution.
• Maintain appropriate monitoring, logging, documentation and operational procedures.
• Ensure compliance with data governance, quality and operational standards.
• Identify opportunities to improve data processes, platform performance and overall efficiency.
• Support initiatives involving metadata management, data governance and future data platform development.

 
Team Leadership & Delivery Management

• Manage and develop a small team of Data Engineers and BI Developers.
• Coordinate and prioritise workloads across development, maintenance and operational support.
• Provide technical guidance, mentoring and hands-on support to team members.
• Promote best practices in SQL development, data modelling, ETL/ELT processes and documentation.
• Ensure development standards, testing procedures and delivery requirements are followed.
• Support the professional development and technical capabilities of the team.

 
Stakeholder Collaboration

• Work closely with Product Owners and business stakeholders to understand and deliver data requirements.
• Translate business needs into practical data engineering and BI solutions.
• Collaborate with reporting and analytics teams to ensure datasets support operational and strategic objectives.
• Coordinate with internal technology teams and external vendors on infrastructure, integrations and platform improvements.
• Act as a key technical contact for Data Warehouse and BI-related matters.

 
Requirements

• 8+ years of relevant professional experience in Data Engineering, Business Intelligence, Data Warehousing or a related field.
• Degree in Information Systems, Business & IT, Data Science or a related discipline at MQF/NQF Level 6 or higher, or an equivalent recognised professional qualification.
• Candidates without the specified qualifications may also be considered with 15+ years of relevant experience.
• Strong knowledge of SQL, relational databases, data modelling and ETL/ELT processes.
• Experience designing, developing or maintaining Data Warehouse environments and reporting architectures.
• Hands-on or management experience with BI tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Qlik or similar platforms.
• Experience gathering requirements and translating business needs into data engineering and reporting solutions.
• Good understanding of project delivery methodologies, testing, change management and release management.
• Knowledge of data governance, data quality, data lineage, KPI frameworks and reporting controls.
• Strong analytical, troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication, organisational and stakeholder management abilities.

 
Nice to Have

• Previous experience managing Data Engineering or BI teams, or leading data platform initiatives.
• Experience with cloud data platforms, modern data architectures or Data Warehouse technologies.
• Previous exposure to financial services, regulatory organisations or other compliance-focused environments.
• Experience with Microsoft data technologies, including:
