About the Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced AI Tech Lead to join an innovative technology company developing advanced AI-powered platforms and solutions.
This is an exciting opportunity to take technical ownership of AI systems that combine Large Language Models (LLMs), intelligent agents, automation and orchestration technologies to help businesses streamline complex processes.
The role combines hands-on AI engineering, solution architecture and technical leadership, with responsibility for designing scalable, reliable and production-ready AI applications.
You will lead technical decisions across AI agents, LLM orchestration, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and backend services, while mentoring engineers and collaborating closely with Product and Engineering teams.
This position is particularly suited to an experienced AI Engineer or Technical Lead who enjoys remaining hands-on while shaping architecture, engineering standards and technical direction.
 
Key Responsibilities
AI Architecture & Technical Leadership

• Lead the technical direction, architecture and development of AI-powered applications and platforms.
• Design scalable, secure and reliable AI systems that meet business and technical requirements.
• Establish engineering standards, development best practices and architectural guidelines.
• Make key technical decisions relating to AI infrastructure, system integrations and application performance.
• Review technical designs and ensure solutions are maintainable, efficient and production-ready.

 
AI Agents, LLMs & RAG Development

• Lead the design and development of AI agents, LLM-powered applications and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) solutions.
• Develop and optimise workflows involving multiple LLMs, intelligent agents and external tools.
• Work with orchestration frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex or similar technologies.
• Design retrieval pipelines, memory systems and integrations with vector databases.
• Support the development of intelligent automation, scheduling and event-driven AI workflows.
• Implement appropriate evaluation, testing and guardrail frameworks to improve AI reliability and output quality.

 
Backend Engineering & Production AI Systems

• Oversee the development of Python-based backend services, APIs and AI integrations.
• Ensure AI applications are scalable, secure, reliable and optimised for production environments.
• Improve system performance, observability, monitoring and operational efficiency.
• Optimise LLM usage, infrastructure resources and associated operational costs.
• Troubleshoot complex technical challenges across AI services, backend systems and integrations.
• Promote robust testing, deployment and maintenance practices.

 
Team Leadership & Mentoring

• Provide technical guidance and mentorship to AI Engineers and other development team members.
• Review technical designs, architecture decisions and engineering approaches.
• Support complex problem-solving and encourage knowledge sharing across the team.
• Promote engineering best practices, collaboration and continuous technical improvement.
• Help strengthen the team's capabilities in modern AI development and production engineering.

 
Collaboration & Innovation

• Work closely with Product and Engineering teams to translate business requirements into effective AI solutions.
• Evaluate emerging AI technologies, frameworks and development approaches.
• Identify opportunities to improve platform capabilities, development efficiency and system performance.
• Contribute to the continuous evolution of AI architecture, tooling and engineering practices.
• Support the development of innovative AI-powered features and integrations.

 
Requirements

• Strong hands-on experience developing AI agents, LLM-powered applications and RAG systems.
• Advanced programming skills in Python, including backend application development.
• Practical experience with AI orchestration frameworks such as LangChain, LangGraph, LlamaIndex or equivalent technologies.
• Strong understanding of vector databases, retrieval pipelines, APIs and AI system integrations.
• Experience designing, developing and maintaining production-ready AI applications.
• Knowledge of LLM evaluation, testing methodologies and guardrail frameworks.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, scalability, reliability and system performance.
• Excellent problem-solving abilities and a strong systems-thinking approach.
• Ability to make sound technical decisions and communicate complex concepts effectively.
• Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work closely with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

 
Nice to Have

• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes or other containerisation and orchestration technologies.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud Platform.
• Experience working with serverless architectures and cloud-native applications.
• Knowledge of monitoring, observability and performance optimisation.
• Experience with data pipelines, AI governance and responsible AI practices.
• Previous experience mentoring engineers or providing technical leadership within a development team.
